Livingston manager David Martindale believes that Rangers should consider looking closer to home, within the Scottish Premiership, for their next managerial appointment.

And intriguingly, one of the names he floated has Celtic roots.

Specifically, the Livingston head coach, who boasts the title of the longest-serving manager in the Scottish Premiership, thinks that Kilmarnock’s Derek McInnes and Ross County’s Malky Mackay could be apt choices.

Mackay’s mention is particularly intriguing, given his history with Celtic. Between 1993 to 1998, he was part of the Celtic squad, although he wasn’t a regular starter, recording 45 appearances and netting 6 goals.

He said: [SunSport] “Derek and Malky at Ross County, I think the two of them are top, top managers.

“And I think any one of those two could do a job at a club the size of Rangers or Celtic. I genuinely do.

“I don’t get carried away with these foreign names that are so-called better coaches. You have got the ones that’ll come in and do very well, of course you have.

“But I think there’s an abundance of coaches working within Scottish football, maybe even English football, that could do a fantastic job within Scottish football.

“But I do think sometimes we get it in our heads that we’ve got to go and look elsewhere for this fantastic skillset that somebody has marketed themselves very, very well from foreign shores.

“I think there’s a fantastic skillset within Scottish football. I just namechecked two managers, for instance, there.

“I think Derek is one of the best managers in the Premiership. I think Malky is a top, top manager.”

While Martindale praised McInnes and MacKay as “top, top managers”, it’s the Ross County boss’ inclusion in his list that’s bound to spark discussions, especially considering his history with Rangers’ arch-rivals. Would Rangers be open to considering a former Celt?
