BOSTON — Second baseman Enmanuel Valdez left the Red Sox’ 7-2 win against the Angels on Saturday with a left thumb contusion.

Valdez was running the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning when he dived into second base. Angels first baseman Miguel Sanó landed on Valdez’s arm during the quasi-rundown between first and second base on a pickoff attempt.

“He should be OK,” manager Alex Cora said about Valdez after Saturday’s game. “He’s not starting tomorrow. So I think he’ll benefit from that. We’ll check on him tomorrow morning but he should be OK.”

The Red Sox already have three infielders — Vaughn Grissom (left hamstring strain), Trevor Story (shoulder surgery) and Romy Gonzalez (left wrist sprain) — on the injured list.

The 25-year-old Valdez has gone 5-for-39 (.128) with a homer, double, six RBIs, six runs, three walks and 13 strikeouts in 13 games so far this season. He has started 12 of Boston’s 15 games at second base.

On Friday night, shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer demolished his first long ball of the season for the Portland Sea Dogs against the Reading Fightin Phils. On Saturday evening, it was Roman Anthony’s turn.

Boston’s outfield prospect smashed his first home run of the season, nearly to the same part of the ballpark at FirstEnergy Stadium.
