Last January and in the summer, Harry Souttar was the centre-half being linked with Rangers and he has been joined in this window by Scott McKenna.

With Leicester City looking to move on the Australia World Cup star, his name will no doubt been mentioned at Auchenhowie once again as a possible option to strengthen Gers boss Philippe Clement’s squad.

As a Rangers fan, joining his brother John is probably an appealing prospect for Harry Souttar but, how does he compare to his former SPFL rival Scott McKenna.

Why Harry Souttar should get edge for Rangers

There is an obvious similarity between how the two towering centre-halves play.

McKenna is 6ft 3inches tall, Souttar 6ft 5.

And both built with a physique that makes the Scottish Premiership a walk in the park in terms of the usual weekly battles that they would be faced with.

This season neither player has enough minutes in the bank to compare, however, looking at their numbers from 2022/23, it is easy to see how they stand up against each other.

To make things easy, their sides were playing in the Premier League when the data was collated.

Both have issues in possession but Harry Souttar is the one who comes out on top in terms of progressive passing, something that is key for defenders playing for Rangers.

What is interesting is that, in terms of defensive actions, duel win percentage and aerial duel win percentage, Souttar has the better numbers.

They are good at what they do in terms of their profile as a centre-half but Souttar is the better player.

There is a reason why Leicester City paid £15m for his services after an impressive World Cup.

Souttar still has four years on the left of his contract at the King Power Stadium so a permanent deal would involve some serious haggling by Nils Koppen if he wants to make something happen.

This is where McKenna’s biggest advantage lies, he is available and he is nearly out of contract, his wages would also be lower too when you consider his currently salary of £20,000 and Souttar’s of £40,000, according to Capology.

Taking the cheaper option shouldn’t always be the default decision, also, what would you rather sign, a Rangers fan or a Celtic fan?!
