Devis Vasquez was named man of the match in Sheffield Wednesday’s home defeat to Ipswich Town and the AC Milan loanee was asked about his start to life at Hillsborough

Devis Vasquez insists he was only doing his ‘job’ after being named man of the match despite Sheffield Wednesday’s home defeat to Ipswich Town. Conor Chaplin scored the only goal of the game to extend the Owls’ winless start in the league to six matches.

Vasquez made a number of stops to limit Ipswich to just the one goal, and the AC Milan loanee was asked about his own performance following the full-time whistle. The Colombian did not want to focus too much on his own display, and insisted now is the time to rally around under-fire manager Xisco Munoz.

“I think that’s my job, it’s what I have to do,” he said, according to the BBC podcast Owls Heaven. The coach gave me the chance to play here as a result. I only want to succeed.

The goalkeeper added: “We have to be confident. We have to trust in ourselves and the coach’s ideas. We have to be better every day.”

Vasquez’s debut for Wednesday came in the Carabao Cup first-round victory against Stockport County last month, where he made two saves in a penalty shootout. The shot-stopper signed for AC Milan in January, and believes the season-long switch to Hillsborough represents an ideal chance to play.

Asked about AC Milan’s message on the loan, Vasquez said: “They say we want you to play. This is a good opportunity to play in a competitive league so it’s going to be good for me.”
