Latest Nottingham Forest news from NottinghamshireLive as Carlisle manager Paul Simpson takes aim at his players after their EFL Trophy defeat to Reds U21s

Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson tore into his players after their defeat to Nottingham Forest in the EFL Trophy.

The Reds U21s beat Carlisle 2-0 at Brunton Park thanks to goals from Josh Powell and Ben Perry. The League One Cumbrians played a second string team in the tie, but it didn’t stop an angry Simpson describing the performance as “disgraceful”.

“Wow. As a professional footballer, there are some players out there tonight that should be absolutely embarrassed with what they’ve produced,” he said.

Powell and Perry both struck in the second half to fire Forest to their first win in the competition in their second group game. Their opening game had seen them beaten by Harrogate Town last month.

Simpson also hit back at suggestions he would need to lift his players after such a bad result. “Hang on a minute, they’re human beings and they’re adults,” he added.

“They don’t need somebody to lift them, they have to lift yourself. You’re a professional footballer and this is your bloody job.”
