Mark Venus has revealed Siriki Dembele missed Birmingham City’s defeat to Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening due to an injury.

The Ivorian winger wasn’t named among the substitutes after suffering a foot injury and watched on as Riley McGree settled an uneventful encounter at St Andrew’s. Blues’ fourth defeat in five games leaves them 21st in the Championship, one point above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s clash with Watford.

Explaining Dembele’s absence, Venus said: “He’s got an injury. He’s got some stitches in his foot through a clash. I don’t know how long he will be out but he’s got a few stitches in his foot.”

Dembele has been used off the bench more often than not in recent weeks. The 27-year-old impressed at the beginning of Tony Mowbray’s tenure but his form has tailed off in the past month.

With the influential Krystian Bielik already out of the Watford match, Dembele now looks set to join him on the sidelines until after the international break. Blues captain Dion Sanderson will return at the weekend after serving a three-game ban.
