Before Wednesday night, Michael Redd was the proud owner of the Milwaukee Bucks franchise scoring record. The All-Star shooting guard set the mark in November 2006 when he dropped a career-high 57 points against the Utah Jazz.
Redd had no choice but to concede that record 17 years later when Giannis Antetokounmpo amassed a mind-blowing 64 points against the Indiana Pacers at the Fiserv Forum.
Milwaukee Bucks Coach Adrian Griffin Urged Giannis Antetokounmpo
In his post-game interview, Antetokounmpo revealed that he actually had no intention of going for Michael Redd’s record. However, at one point in the game, it was Bucks coach Adrian Griffin who urged him to do so:
“Coach Griff told me. He was like, ‘(You’re) two points away from the franchise record,’” Giannis said. “I told him, ‘I’m good.’ Because I knew that it was the time for me to get the sub. [Griffin] was like, ‘No, you’re two points away from the franchise record. Get it.’”
At that point in the game, Antetokounmpo had already tied his previous career high of 55 points, which as he said, was just two points away from Redd’s 57-point record.
I guess we all have Coach Griffin to thank for keeping Giannis in the game and telling him to actually go for it. Not only did the former back-to-back MVP surpass the record, but he also became the only player in Bucks history to eclipse the 60-point mark.
