Kasper Schmeichel, a former captain of Leicester City, has signed a one-year contract with Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League.

On the final day of transfers, Ligue 1 team OGC Nice released the 36-year-old for free.

He was initially linked with a move to reunite with former Leicester manager Brendan Rogers at Celtic, who were in the market for a replacement for the struggling Joe Hart.

However, since the start of the new season Hart has seen a resurgence in form, most recently putting in a stellar performance in the Old Firm derby against Rangers.

Free agent Schmeichel has now joined Anderlecht on a one-year-deal but with the option to extent for another year.

Schmeichel played 479 times with the Foxes, helping them get promoted and win the Community Shield, FA Cup, and Premier League.

He joined Nice on a free transfer from Leicester, but had a mediocre year there, making 46 appearances across all leagues.

In the final weeks of the transfer window, Schmeichel had interest from Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford but apparently desired to challenge for the starting job at a major league team.
