It’s safe to say year one under head coach DeMeco Ryans was a success.

The Houston Texans went 10-7, won the AFC South and defeated the Cleveland Browns, 45-14, in the Wild Card round. C.J. Stroud had one of the most memorable rookie seasons of all time, and has the makings of a franchise quarterback. The Texans traded and drafted Will Anderson Jr. third overall and he won Defensive Rookie of the Year. Popular head coaching candidate Bobby Slowik returned to Houston as the offensive coordinator. Ryans himself was one vote away from Coach of the Year, losing the tiebreaker to the coach he beat in the playoffs.

The Athletic released its 2024 NFL power rankings Tuesday that placed the Texans fifth overall, in front of teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins.

“The Texans are one of the big movers since the last publication of these rankings,” the article said. “Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud put 45 points on one of the league’s most aggressive defenses in the playoffs, beating the Browns, 45-14, in the Wild Card round, and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. His offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik, is back after taking head coaching interviews, and Houston has $57.4 million in cap space.”
The last time they released an NFL power rankings list was right before the playoffs. Houston was ranked ninth at that time, before beating the Browns (ranked third on the previous list) in the Wild Card.
