Conor Coady calls for Everton culture change in new transfer verdict

Conor Coady has suggested that Everton must change their culture and find leaders within their squad, rather than hoping new arrivals will save them from relegation.

The Toffees have dodged relegation to the Championship late in the campaign in both of the last two seasons, with most supporters at Goodison Park believing that a couple of extra high-quality signings would help them climb up the Premier League table.

But Leicester City defender Coady who spent last season on loan at Goodison Park believes that Sean Dyche’s side cannot rely on new arrivals to change their fortunes anymore and instead must look to change the culture in the squad already in place.

Speaking on the BBC’s Monday Night Club (16 October) he said: “I think over the last few years where Everton have been, everybody has been hoping for those couple of players. Everyone has been saying, we need this, or we need that.

“I actually think it has to be found from within. I will be completely honest. That’s what I really believe. I was part of a team at Wolves, and it’s a lot different I understand, but we changed from being a really poor Championship side to getting promoted out of the Championship and doing really well in the Premier League.

“We changed a lot – we brought a few players in – but there was a culture change from within. I think that can be done at Everton as well, I really do believe that.  I get the feeling that people at Everton every transfer window, and we did it last year, we need this player, that player would be great, imagine if he comes in. It never happens.”

It is always interesting to get a look behind the curtain within a team’s changing room and Everton fans have been lucky enough to have two excellent pieces of insight quite quickly, with Coady’s analysis and the ‘BBC’s Everton: Nothing will be the same.’

You expect supporters to be pining for new signings each and every transfer window and that is the case at football clubs up and down the country, but it is surprising to hear that players inside clubs are also so keen to see new additions to their side.
