Bruno Guimaraes is set to become the best-paid player in Newcastle United’s history when he signs a new contract that is now close to being finalised, sources have told Football Insider.

Talks have been ongoing in recent months over a new and improved deal for the club’s star man, 25, that will catapult him into the top earning bracket at the club.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Newcastle are close to a breakthrough in negotiations with Guimaraes, who has established himself as one of Europe’s leading midfielders since his move to Newcastle in January 2022.

It is anticipated that a new contract worth up to £60 million would shortly be announced, making him the highest-paid player in Newcastle’s history.

Football Insider reported that the north-east giants are willing to extend the Brazilian’s contract by two more years and give him a massive pay rise that would bring his weekly salary to close to £200,000 with add-ons.

He is now paid £120,000 a week under his contract with the Magpies, which is valid until June 2026, according to FBRef.

One of the major issues during the drawn-out negotiations with Guimaraes is believed to have been whether or not the new contract would have a release provision.

Since the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia acquired the club in October 2021, the team has previously refused to accept release clauses.

In January 2022, the Brazilian international moved from Lyon for an initial fee of £38 million, which may increase to £43 million with add-ons.

Guimaraes, who has expressed a desire to establish himself as a “legend” at St James’ Park, has recently been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid.

In a little more than 18 months at the club, Guimaraes has contributed to Eddie Howe’s team becoming a Champions League team.

In his 61 appearances for Newcastle, the Brazilian has been a dynamic force in centre midfield, contributing an outstanding ten goals and six assists.
