We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he will give his views on the key talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham need to play counter-attacking football if they want to gain an advantage in their clash with Manchester City.

The Hammers welcome the reigning champions to the London Stadium for their Premier League clash on Saturday 16 September.

The home team is currently ranked 2nd on the table with 10 points, 2 points behind the top team. Both clubs remain unbeaten after their four matches so far this season ahead of the encounter in east London. Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said:
“I know sometimes I try David Moyes’ defensive thinking, but this is one of those games where you have to play counter-attacking football, and they are very good at that.

“I’m a realist and I know that’s how football works, but I’d like to see them lead more. But I understand that and they are getting results. No matter what, they will lead approach it with full optimism.” sure. I think West Ham can learn something from the match. “Manchester City will have all the ball, but I hope we score a few goals. This is the only game where I don’t mind West Ham counter-attacking, because if they meet Manchester City, they will be beaten. And they can be beaten heavily, like those who did it against Manchester City when they were on match day.

“But West Ham confuses me. I thought they might be in trouble at Brighton but they won. I thought they would be in trouble against Chelsea, but they won. If we get a draw this weekend I will be delighted. A win would be even better.
