J.D. Martinez has found a new home.
The former Boston Red Sox designated hitter agreed to deal with the New York Mets on Thursday night, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported.Martinez spent the 2023 Major League Baseball season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the club to reunite with former Red Sox teammates Mookie Betts and Joe Kelly.Martinez reportedly had contract offers from the Mets as well as the Los Angeles Angels, but Heyman reported that both were too low for the 36-year-old. Heyman also noted Martinez turned down a $15 million offer from the San Francisco Giants.
The Red Sox signed Martinez to a five-year, $110 million deal ahead of the 2018 season and he quickly became a staple in Boston’s lineup. His 43 home runs, 130 RBI and .330 batting average earned him two Silver Slugger Awards — one as designated hitter and the other as an outfielder. He became the first player to reach such a feat.
Martinez is coming off a 2023 season in which he batted .271 with 33 home runs and 103 RBI. He’ll certainly add power to a Mets lineup that needed a proven power hitter to rebound from a disappointing 75-87 finish.
