Nic Newman achieved his first career top-10 best-and-fairest finish in incredible fashion.

ALWAYS highly regarded at IKON Park, there were still very few who would’ve expected Nic Newman to reach the heights he did in 2023.

Jugingging by his speech on John Nicholls Medal night, you can include the man himself in that bracket.

Once again named as Best Clubman (the third time in five years), Newman was behind only Jacob Weitering in the best-and-fairest count to finish runner-up.

When up on stage, the incredulous Newman’s first comment drew immediate applause from the 1,400 strong in attendance.

“I’m a bit shocked to be honest. I’ve never finished in the top 10 in a best and fairest in my whole career, so . . .” Newman said on the night

“No, I can’t believe it.

“Like every player in the room, you have ups and downs. I’ve had a few of those. Me and Charlie were in rehab for a year and a half together.

“You reflect on those times and it makes it all worth it, moments like this. I’m just grateful this footy club gave me an opportunity.”

With the Continental Tyres Trade Period currently underway, Newman’s journey serves as a poignant reminder that it’s not always the blockbuster trades that make a list build.

It was a future fourth-round draft pick in the dying minutes of the 2018 trade period which brought Newman to Carlton. He’s spoken at length about how that period in his career served as a wake-up call for someone now regarded as a beloved defender at IKON Park

With a nasty knee injury also to deal with in 2020, he couldn’t be where he is today without the people in his corner since day one.

“I was at the crossroads in my career, and I’m so thankful to this footy club for giving me an opportunity.

“I’ve had some magnificent people in my life, not only professionally but personally as well. My family here tonight, they’ve supported me through it all, from playing local footy, under-18s, Stingrays and to the Frankston Dolphins in the VFL.

“Also my partner Sam . . . she’s a popular figure around this place, probably more so than myself! Her support through the injuries, she has to deal with the worst as much as anyone.”
