When the two teams meet at Anfield on Sunday (see live at 9am ET on USA Network and online via NBCSports.com), Liverpool hopes to maintain its positive momentum against the spirited Aston Villa. Darwin Nunez scored twice off the bench for the Reds during their 10-man comeback victory over Newcastle, which came after Virgil van Dijk was dismissed from the game at St. James’ Park.

However, Villa has been on fire since suffering crushing defeat to Newcastle to start the year, thrashing Everton, Hibernian, and Burnley (and as of the time of this writing, they have already defeated Hibs again in Europa Conference League action). Ollie Watkins and the Villans will be tough test for the Reds’ back line without Van Dijk, but Jurgen Klopp will be prepared to take on Unai Emery in battle of brilliant minds.

Update
Aston Villa team news, squad selection
Unai Emery does not know if Emiliano Martinez or Alex Moreno will be ready to leave on Sunday.
Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia will be out long-term, while Jacob Ramsey, Leander Dendoncker, Philippe Coutinho and Timothy Iroegbunam are also likely to miss the trip to Anfield.
Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby continued to attack strongly, and that was only the tip of the iceberg as Villa went bust against Liverpool’s confused defence.
Liverpool squad news, squad selection
Liverpool are certainly without Virgil van Dijk after his red card, but can they deal with both his absence and the absence of Ibrahima Konate?
The second player has a chance to play but Jurgen Klopp said it may be necessary to take an international break to get him back on the pitch.
Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones are both being assessed before returning to the pitch, and Liverpool are also on the hunt for a midfielder as reports on Thursday suggest a deal has been agreed with Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich.
Mohamed Salah remains key in attack, but will he lead the line with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and/or Cody Gakpo?
And as we learned from the Newcastle game, having one of the best goalkeepers in the world is essential.
Alisson was and is amazing.
