A Bulldogs forward has cemented his future for the long term.

The Western Bulldogs have announced a new eight-year contract extension for key forward Aaron Naughton, keeping him in the kennel until the end of the 2032 season.

The club announced the landmark retention deal on Wednesday night. The West Australian is the first of a number of significant re-signings the Dogs are looking to work on over the next 12 months.

Naughton said his decision was a “special moment” and that he is looking forward to a future in blue, white and red. “It’s a special moment for me to sign, especially for my family,” Naughton said.

“To sign a long contract and be here to stay, especially for my teammates, I want them to know that I’m with them. Playing with these guys for years is really exciting.

“When you’re welcomed into this club and they make you feel so welcome, not just me but the whole family back in WA, it’s amazing. You build strong bonds with all your teammates and I have some of my best friends here. . “I feel for this group and what we can do in the next few years. It’s hard work and I know this group is ready to work hard every day.”

 

Naughton has made 123 appearances for the Bulldogs since making his debut in 2018 and has kicked a total of 191 goals, leading the club’s goalscoring charts over the past two seasons. The 23-year-old is the first major shake-up for the Dogs ahead of a crucial year for the club’s top team, with the likes of Tim English, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Bailey Smith set to depart in 2024.

Bulldogs list manager Sam Power expressed his delight at Naughton’s decision to sign a new long-term deal.

“Aaron is an outstanding player and an exceptional person and it will undoubtedly be an exciting day for the club as well as our members and fans,” Power said.

“We love what Aaron brings to this football club every day, so it is fantastic that we have agreed a long-term contract extension with our manager Andrew McDougall at the Australian company before the start of 2024. “Aaron’s renewal is another strong demonstration of faith . in the direction of the long-term goals and culture of the club. “Aaron continues to be a vital leader amongst the group and will set the benchmark on and off the pitch as the club hope to climb the ladder.

“We see Aaron as a big part of the Bulldogs’ future as he is only 23 years old and we are delighted that our supporters will be able to follow him for many years to come.”

After joining the club via the 2017 national draft, Naughton’s deal will take him into his 15th year at the club when the deal expires.
