Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecolgou has revealed the reason why Destiny Udogie has been selected as Spurs’ first-choice left-back.

Udogie joined north London side Hellas Verona in 2022 but was immediately loaned out to Udinese to gain more first-team experience.

Since returning to Tottenham, the Italian-Nigerian full-back has impressed Postecoglou, who also became the club’s new manager last summer and has started every Premier League game so far under the Greek-born tactician.

The 58-year-old revealed the reason why he settled on Udogie as his first-choice left-back, citing his performances at Udinese last season.

Quoted by Football London, Postecolgou said: “When I got the role I looked at all the players who were out on loan last year and Destiny was one. “I really liked his profile. Physically he has great qualities, but obviously he played a different football because he was used a lot as an attacking full-back.

“He made a real impact as a youngster in a difficult league. Serie A is a difficult league. He handled himself very well and it was one of those where as soon as we got him in, I could see that he wanted to improve every day. . – He has great qualities and for a 20-year-old he already had quite big challenges in defense and he handled himself so well.

“When he has the ball and runs forward, he looks exciting. I’m very happy to have him in the group.”

The only game Udogie missed this season was Tottenham’s Carabao Cup tie with Fulham, which they lost on penalties.

He played a key role in Spurs’ unbeaten start to the Premier League, which saw Spurs pick up 14 points from six games.

The 20-year-old will start his seventh consecutive Premier League game when the Lilywhites take on Liverpool later today.
