Burnley’s offer to lend the Chelsea left back money with the option to purchase it was approved by the west London club, despite the left back being extensively connected with a move to east London during the transfer window.

According to the Evening Standard, the player is believed to have refused the move to Turf Moor, where he had spent a loan period, and was instead interested in moving across London to play for David Moyes.

Maatsen was viewed as a replacement for Aaron Cresswell, who appeared to be leaving for much of the summer, but his transfer to Wolves fell through.

Maatsen’s decision to reject the transfer to Burnley raises the question of whether West Ham would reconsider the agreement when the transfer window reopens in January.

Maatsen would likely be acquired should Cresswell go, especially if the left defender is unable to secure a regular spot in the Chelsea squad before the new year.
