Town will need to assess whether Burns is fit to play against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

Wales coach Rob Page has confirmed that Ipswich Town winger Wes Burns has suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty.

The 28-year-old came off the bench for the final 30 minutes of the Dragons’ 0-0 draw against South Korea, playing until the final whistle.

Only then were concerns raised about his hamstring and he was sent back to Suffolk to allow the Blues to further assess him ahead of Saturday’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

Page had previously expressed disappointment with the scheduling of Wales’ friendly with South Korea, describing it as a meaningless match ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifier against Latvia this evening.

“I didn’t want this fight because I didn’t want to risk getting injured,” he said. “We had injuries in this game, but it had a lot of positives.

“Wes came on and he had a hamstring injury. We have a duty of care to the player as well as the club, so bringing him [to Latvia] was too risky.

“He has torn his hamstring, so it’s better to get him back.”

Although Burns will not be available for Wales’ match in Riga tonight, Nathan Broadhead could still be involved, having started alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Brennan Johnson against South Korea last week.
