Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison is becoming one of his favourite players in the Premier League.

Carragher praised the former Leicester City star in his column for the Telegraph, comparing the 26-year-old to two Spurs legends.

“James Maddison is fast becoming one of my favorite footballers in the Premier League. He plays and talks as if he’s from a bygone era.

“Madison is like the quintessential Spurs player and continues in the tradition of Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle who bring smiles to the faces of his fans.”

It’s certainly high praise for Maddison from Carragher, and it’s no surprise given the England international started his career with the Lilywhites.

Is James Maddison the next Hoddle or Gascoigne?

Gascoigne and Hoddle, who spent several years at Tottenham, were considered the most creative and exciting talents of their generations, mesmerising crowds with their performances.

Maddison seems to have brought that sense of anticipation back to the North London side, who have missed a spark in the middle of the park since Christian Eriksen’s departure in January 2020.

Tottenham signed Maddison from Leicester City for £40m this summer, but in retrospect the Lilywhites appear to have been a bargain.

Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, but there were concerns at the north London club about the 2023/24 season without their record goalscorer’s impact and contribution.

Manager Ange Postecoglou had a difficult task ahead of him, but the Australian showed his tactical flair and made the most of Tottenham’s attack, which played unimpeded football.

Maddison and Son Heung-min have been the main protagonists for Spurs’ success so far and the former Leicester star looks to have formed a great partnership and understanding with the South Korea international.

Not only Carragher, but Maddison has also enamoured many Tottenham fans with his evident quality and passion for the North London side. Hopefully, Spurs’ number 10 will continue his purple patch for years and help the North London side break their trophy drought.
