Fans are making similar comparisons to Tottenham after Bayern Munich were awarded a controversial penalty against Manchester United.

Bayern defeated United 4-3 in a chaotic Champions League Group A opening match.

It was United’s fourth defeat in six matches, as Erik ten Hag’s side struggled with a poor performance on the field, a string of injuries and a number of off-field problems.

However, the main talking point in Bayern’s victory over United was the penalty awarded to the Bavarians in the second half, when the score was 2-1.

Bayern’s corner was taken by Dayot Upamecano, with the Frenchman nodding towards Christian Eriksen’s hand from close range. Although the Dane’s hand is in an unnatural position, he would not be able to move his arm away as it is close to the Bayern centre-back.

The referee dismissed Bayern’s appeal only to be warned of the incident by the video assistant referee (VAR). Of course, pointing to the penalty spot, Harry Kane decisively took the penalty.

Some United fans on social media noted a similar incident involving United earlier this season leading to a different VAR decision.

Indeed, against Tottenham, Alejandro Garnacho rifled a shot into Christian Romero’s arm from close range, which led to massive calls for a penalty.

However, Michael Oliver waved away the appeals, even though Romero’s arm was in an unnatural position, presumably because of the distance between Garnacho and the Spurs defender.

Of course, it has also been noted that these two incidents were in different competitions, where rules regarding refereeing and the use of VAR slightly differ.

Bayern Munich were awarded a controversial penalty against Manchester United in the Champions League, with fans slamming the decision.

Harry Kane restored Bayern’s two-goal lead following Rasmus Hojlund’s strike just after the break when he slotted home a penalty.

But the decision to award the hosts a spot-kick angered Man United fans on social media as they made their feelings known.

From a corner, Dayot Upamecano headed towards goal, with the ball hitting Christian Eriksen’s arm as the match referee eventually pointed to the spot following a VAR review.

Needless to say, people online fumed over the decision.

One X user wrote: “How is that a penalty?? Football is finished.”

A second said: “He literally headed it 2 inches away from Eriksen? What’s he meant to do??? We’ve been ROBBED.”

A third added: “VAR is a disgrace. The foul on Pellistri was more of a penalty than that. What can the Eriksen do, chop off his arms?”

A fourth commented: “He actually heads it at his arm. Ridiculous decision.”

A fifth weighed in: “That is just not a penalty kick. So harsh on Christian Eriksen. Where else could he put his arm in that situation?”
