The latest Leicester City news as the England youth international left the club as a free agent in the summer.

Kelechi Chibueze, a former custodian for the Leicester City and Chelsea youth teams, is reportedly on trial with Sunderland of the Championship, with a chance to play for their U21 squad.

The 19-year-old departed City this summer after his contract expired and is free to join another team. Since joining the team as a free agent in February 2021, Chibueze had been there.

The custodian graduated from Chelsea’s academy, but was let go by the team in October 2020. A few months later, he signed with City. He played once for the club’s U18 team while he was at Stamford Bridge.

In the 2021–2022 season, he made 12 appearances for City’s U18s and occasionally sat on the bench for the U21s team. Chibueze was only ever included in the development squad last year when he served as an unutilized substitute in a 3-0 loss to Wolves.

The teenager is currently trying to impress on a trial with Sunderland as they want to improve their goalkeeping options, according to the Sunderland Echo. He is reportedly working out with the club’s U21 team in preparation for a prospective transfer.

With first choice Adam Richardson out injured, the Black Cats are looking to expand their goalkeeping alternatives for their development squad. Nathan Bishop, a summer signing who is one of the allowed overage players, has been filling in, and the club has named the 22-year-old to the starting XI.

It is reported that Chibueze is still undergoing a trial with the club, although it is still unclear whether the trial will result in a more long-term arrangement. Recently, City has been successful in integrating goalkeepers from their development system into first team play.

In contrast to Daniel Iversen, who was elevated to the first choice position for the second part of the Premier League season last year, Jakub Stolarczyk has established himself as Mads Hermansen’s backup this season.
