Sheffield Wednesday welcome fellow newly-promoted side Ipswich Town to Hillsborough this weekend and the visitors have a major doubt over Wales man Wes Burns.

Ipswich Town are sweating on the fitness of one of their key players ahead of this weekend’s visit to Sheffield Wednesday.

Tractor Boys’ man Wes Burns suffered a hamstring injury during the current international break. Burns, 28, came off the bench for the final 30 minutes of Wales’ goalless friendly draw with South Korea in Cardiff last week.

Prior to their Saturday trip to Hillsborough, Welsh manager Robert Page made the decision to send the midfielder back to his native club out of an abundance of caution. Burns won’t be playing in Wales’ crucial Euro 2024 qualifier tonight in Latvia as a result.

Page said: “I didn’t want the game because I didn’t want to risk injuries. We’ve picked up an injury from that game, but there’s lots of positives to come out of it. Wes has come on and he’s tweaked his hamstring. We’ve got a duty of care for the player and for the club as well, so it was too risky to bring him [to Latvia]. He’s pulled his hamstring, so it’s best off to send him back.”
