After jamming his hand during his second at-bat in Boston’s game against the Chicago Cubs on April 28, Masataka Yoshida left the game. Regarding the extent of the designated hitter’s injury, the team gave conflicting signals. While Yoshida himself stated he would wait to undergo testing or imaging, Alex Cora expressed concern during the postgame news conference.
A few days later, Boston stated that Yoshida might require surgery on his left thumb and that more opinions would be required before a decision could be taken.
Yoshida informed Japanese reporters on May 10, one week after he was placed on the disabled list, that he does not require thumb surgery. Although Yoshida was initially placed on the 10-day IL, his term has already passed, and the Red Sox have not disclosed when he will return.

Yoshida was about to heat up with his bat when he got hurt. Yoshida should return to the starting lineup as soon as possible because Boston’s bats have been quiet lately. Yoshida has previously called his thumb injury “a strange case,” which may indicate that he won’t be making a speedy recovery.
