Matt O’Riley has been waiting for his chance in a Denmark shirt.

The Celtic star has had to bide his time this season to be named in Kasper Hjulmand’s squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers but was finally handed his first start for his chosen nation. The Hoops midfielder – who has stunned this term so far in green and white with six goals and seven assists in 17 – was handed the number 10 jersey at Windsor Park.

But rather that continue their form which saw them top their group in qualification, the Danes fell to a 2-0 defeat to Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland and the nation’s press let rip at full-time.

O’Riley could not escape the player ratings from reputable outlet bold.dk where he was hit with a 3/10 for his performance littered with mistakes including one which led to a goal.

The report reads: “Look forward to seeing the Celtic star in action in the red and white shirt. Delivered plenty of energy in the midfield in his national team debut, but several mistakes also crept in. Among other things, a bad pass that started the Northern Irish’s counterattack, and it resulted in a goal.”

O’Riley was one of the HIGHEST scorers on the list with the likes of Kasper Schmeichel (2), Rasmus Nissen (2) and Jesper Lindstrøm (1) all blasted.
