The Vikings starting quarterback Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles last weekend.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has described their newly acquired quarterback Joshua Dobbs as “very smart and intelligent”.

The Vikings traded for Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals after starting quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 8’s win over the Green Bay Packers.

Dobbs is unlikely to start in Week 9, with the Vikings set to give rookie Jaren Hall an opportunity to impress as the starter against the Atlanta Falcons.

But speaking to the Pat McAfee show on Thursday, O’Connell praised the work done by veteran Dobbs at the Cardinals so far this season.

“We looked at a lot of scenarios and different guys,” said O’Connell.

“Josh, being available at the right time for us, is a guy who has started a lot of football this year.

“When you turn on the tape the things he was doing to move the team in Arizona against the San Franciscos and Balitmores of this world.

“You watched him play quarterback, you saw the athleticism and he’s very smart and intelligent.

“We ask our quarterbacks to do a lot here so we wanted to make sure we were adding someone to the room [like that], we want to have options.”
