Jamie Carragher praised Tottenham star James Maddison

Tottenham signed James Maddison for just £40m this summer (Sky Sports).

That fee now looks like a bargain given the England international has scored two goals and provided four assists in just over 500 minutes of action this season. He is undoubtedly one of the best players in the country at the moment, and Jamie Carragher says the 26-year-old is fast becoming one of his favorite players in the Premier League. This expert also compared Maddison to Tottenham legends Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle.

He wrote in his column in The Telegraph:

“James Maddison is quickly becoming one of my favorite Premier League players; he plays and speaks as if from a bygone era.

“There is a cheeky charm to Maddison on and off the pitch – a maverick who puts you in mind of 1970 icons Rodney Marsh or Frank Worthington. He wants to entertain with the ball and has no filter when asked for opinions.

“You cannot be sure if he is talking about the game or recreating a scene from The Inbetweeners.

“Maddison looks like the prototype Spurs player, following in the traditions of Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle – an individual who puts a smile on supporters’ faces.

“Football is always more joyful when characters like Maddison see the game as an art more than a science. He is one of those rare footballers that the home fans adore and even rival fans cannot help but be endeared by.”

Maddison can hurt Liverpool

Liverpool, like Tottenham, is having an excellent start to the season.

The Red Devils appear to be returning to their best after last season’s disappointing campaign, and they will be a tough team to face against Tottenham tomorrow.

However, no matter how well Liverpool play, their defense still has gaps and if there is one person who can punish them now it is Maddison.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham’s number 10 can help his Spurs side win against the Red Devils tomorrow.
