No contact’: Nottingham Forest academy graduate involved in controversial red card decision

Patrick Bamford, a recent graduate of the Nottingham Forest academy, was involved in a contentious red card decision for Leeds United Friday night against QPR.

The 30-year-old forward attempted to evade Asmir Begovic, who sprinted out of his penalty area, by dribbling the ball around him.

Despite the Bosnian shot-stopper making no touch, Bamford threw himself on the ground.

The officials missed Bamford’s dive, which resulted to Begovic’s straight red card and further compounded QPR’s misery in the 1-0 loss at Elland Road.

It is safe to say that R’s manager Gareth Ainsworth was less than thrilled with the choice that resulted in his goalie being given the boot.

After the game, Ainsworth shared his frank assessment of the incident with the club’s media.

“I honestly don’t understand why Asmir [Begovic] was punished for it.

We haven’t had the rub of the green because there hasn’t been any contact between him and [Patrick] Bamford, and I don’t want to complain about the refs right now.”

Ainsworth said that he would attempt to appeal the decision to have the ban lifted despite receiving a red card.

He hasn’t touched the man, so I would kick myself if I didn’t look into it and see if I can appeal it.

“As far as I can recall, it can’t be a card or a foul if you don’t make touch with anyone. But for now, it’s difficult to accept, and I undoubtedly feel resentful of the choice.
