Mark Tauscher played an integral part in some of the Green Bay Packers’ greatest moments during his 11-year career.

Sunday was definitely not a proud moment in Packers history. The team looked terrible in an embarrassing 19-17 loss to the Denver Broncos, a bad team that is usually on the other side in these types of games.

Tauscher, who won a Super Bowl trophy in Green Bay and is in the Packers Hall of Fame, absolutely shredded the team in an appearance on ESPN Milwaukee immediately afterward.

The former offensive tackle started with a question on the Green Bay GameNight show.

“I’m going to start with a question today,” Tauscher said. “Besides the Carolina Panthers, who’s the worst team in the NFL right now?”

“Let me put it this way. You can’t distinctly say that it’s not the Green Bay Packers. … The idea that Green Bay is in that mix with the Dallas Cowboys or the Detroit Lions, which maybe we thought after Week 1 or Week 2. Here’s the bottom line. … What we’re realizing is we knew this was a rebuilding year, there were going to be a ton of growing pains, but we’re just not a very good football team.”

It’s hard to argue with Tauscher. Packers quarterback Jordan Love passed for only 180 yards against the worst pass defense in the NFL. And Love doesn’t deserve all the blame — the Packers game plan seemed built around conservative runs between the tackles and 3-yard passes. The Packers defense gave up 5.8 yards per carry to Broncos rushers.

“This is a bottom tier NFL football team as we sit here right now,” Tauscher said. “That’s the facts, I didn’t want to acknowledge that right now.

“You just lost and had to scrape to get 17 points against one of the all-time worst NFL defenses through five or six weeks, we’ve ever seen. In that first half, (Denver) looked like the ’85 (Chicago) Bears against our offense.

“We just have to come to grips as Packers fans. It’s going to be a long year. … We’re just not a very good football team right now, and that hasn’t been said in quite a while in Titletown.”
