Jonjo Shelvey, a midfielder for Nottingham Forest, is reportedly due to sign with Turkish club Caykur Rizespor today, according to a report from The Telegraph. In the summer, there were rumours that Leeds coveted the England international.

Shelvey, 31, recently moved from Newcastle to Forest in January. But Steve Cooper is willing to let him go after just eight games for Forest. According to TeamTalk, there was an altercation between the two last season.

Shelvey left the team near the close of the last campaign, and thus far this year, he hasn’t played a single minute. According to the TeamTalk report, Leeds are mulling a move for the former Liverpool star.

But it now seems that he is travelling to Turkey. Instead, Leeds signed Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev in midfield, and Caykur Rizespor of the SuperLig is vying to sign the Forest player. He is anticipated to join them on loan.

Forest star Shelvey set to join Turkish side amid Leeds reports

Leeds never needed Shelvey. Daniel Farke wants this Leeds side to play high-energy football and that is simply not what Shelvey provides – especially, as he grows into his thirties. A player with a slow tempo.

It looks good on the eye, having Shelvey sit at the base of the midfield and picking out wingers. But that is not how this Leeds side play. Ethan Ampadu is already sitting in the holding midfield role for Leeds.

While his passing might not be as good as Shelvey’s – but only by a little – Ampadu is much more mobile and defensively astute. The Wales star is key to this Leeds side. Shelvey would simply disrupt that.
