After picking up his pen, Appleton said:
“I am delighted to be appointed head coach of this proud and historic football club and would like to thank the owners, James Rodwell and Andy Scott, for placing their trust in me to lead lead the team.

“I will give everything to ensure the success of Charlton Athletic Football Club. To achieve this, we will all have to work together; players, staff and supporters, we all have a role to play.

“I’m excited to get started. I want us to develop a team that we’re all passionate about, never give up, and always give our best. I want my players to enjoy playing for each other, express themselves and feel comfortable the way we want to play. We want to build a winning mentality, starting now.

“This is a competitive league and it takes time to achieve, but the work has begun to reach the heights this club and you as supporters deserve. Okay. Nothing will be taken for granted. We will all have to work harder and follow a team ethic if we want to achieve anything. “I look forward to meeting everyone associated with the club in the coming days and weeks. We will listen, we will learn and we will strive to bring you something special and make you all proud.

The 47-year-old will take part in his first Charlton training session at Sparrows Lane

Supporters can watch Appleton’s first interview as head coach on the club’s website this afternoon, while his first press conference in the role will take place next week.
