Alabama hired Kalen DeBoer as head coach after the late great Nick Saban retired.
After defeating the Texas Longhorns in the College Football Playoff Semi-Final, DeBoer guided the Huskies to the National Championship game while serving as head coach at Washington. In the National Championship game, the Huskies faced Michigan and lost 34–13.
Days after the game, we learned that DeBoer would succeed Saban, who is set to retire following an illustrious career. As they say, you don’t want to be the person who follows the guy, and DeBoer has found himself in that predicament in Tuscaloosa. After what Saban accomplished throughout his lengthy tenure as the Crimson Tide’s coach, there will be high expectations for DeBoer.
Outkick’s Clay Travis spoke on The Next Round to discuss DeBoer. The Next Round questioned him on how much DeBoer’s tenure as Alabama’s head coach terrifies him. “Zero is the answer,” Travis retorted, “because Kalen DeBoer will be fired in roughly four years.” Fans of Alabama are going to have incredibly high expectations. What I believe Alabama supporters will realize—and I believe many of them already did—is that it’s becoming even more evident. Nick Saban had a dynasty; Alabama didn’t have one. Saban could have had ten, twelve, or even fifteen successful college football programmes. He was that excellent. I don’t think any of us will ever achieve the same level of success that he did.”
Without winning football games, DeBoer’s task of winning over Alabama supporters will not be simple. This fan base expects victories, so if DeBoer doesn’t give them, they’ll be furious.
