The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabres in a close game on Wednesday night. Despite appearing to be out of sorts for much of the game, Auston Matthews emerged victorious in overtime, scoring his NHL-leading 54th goal of the year. Both goalies performed admirably, and Toronto’s goal put an end to the low-scoring contest with a 2-1 victory. Mitch Marner once again produced a brilliant feed out of his hat to set up Matthews for the game-winning goal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabres in a close game on Wednesday night to start the season. Auston Matthews appeared to be struggling for much of the game, but in the end—the very end, in fact—he performed well. His game-winning goal in overtime was his 54th goal of the season, leading the NHL.

The goal by Matthews gave Toronto a 2-1 victory to close the low-scoring match. Both goalies played admirably. Once more, Mitch Marner provided Matthews with the game-winning feed out of his hat.

Ilya Samsonov, the goalie, was crucial in keeping the victory intact even though Matthews’ valiant actions brought the curtain down. 24 saves were made by him, including a fantastic glove stop on Tage Thompson’s rocket.
