The Chicago Bears needed to win their game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.

No, the Bears did not need to win for some false sense of appearing in “in the hunt” graphics when the national pre-game shows the graphic for the NFL’s current playoff picture. No, the Bears didn’t even need to win for the fall sense of winning one for the job security of head coach Matt Eberflus.

game was a must-win for the Bears was due to draft positioning. The best path for the Bears to secure the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is through the Carolina Panthers.

The Bears have the rights to the Panthers’ 2024 first-round pick and with a victory on Thursday, their chances of securing the pick moved to 43%, the highest of any team in the NFL.

That would be the reason why it was hilarious to watch Colin Cowherd try and have a gotcha moment on Friday when emphatically stating that the Bears ruined their chances of getting Caleb Williams or Drake Maye by beating the Panthers on Thursday.

Think about the fact that Cowherd probably thought this was going to be his “drop mic” moment on the Bears and provide yet another reason to talk about the team making the wrong decision. But, Cowherd’s flub on Friday was equally as comical as Eberflus’ press conference this past week.

The best part of the whole segment was Cowherd congratulating the Bears for their meaningless win on Thursday while ruining their chances of taking Williams or Maye but then the very next graphic is the project 2024 draft order with the Bears’ logo sitting proudly at first overall.
