The Houston Texans are entering free agency looking to make a big splash and fill the holes on their roster left by more than 30 impending free agents. Based on the new unprecedented salary cap increase for the 2024 season, as well as recent projections, they should be able to do just that.
As a result of the increase, which raises the cap for the league to $255.4 million, new projections released on Friday by Texans Cap have shown the Texans to have $69.8 million in cap space heading to the free agency period later this month. In other words, the Texans will have more flexibility to sign an impact-free agent like Brian Burns, Chase Young, or even star running back Saquon Barkley, who will be commanding approximately $36 million in a new deal.
It will also give them the ability to bring back an impact player they otherwise could have lost like Jonathan Greenard, Derek Barnett, or Devin Singletary in addition to bringing in new star talent.
So why did the increase happen? According to a statement released by the NFL, it is due to a repayment of money advanced by clubs to players during the Covid-19 pandemic, and a massive rise in media revenue. “The unprecedented $30 million increase per club in this year’s salary cap is the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by the clubs and deferred by the players during the Covid pandemic as well as an extraordinary increase in media revenue for the 2024 season,” the NFL said in a statement.
