At TD Place in Ottawa, in front of yet another boisterous 8,447 spectators, Toronto put the home crowd out of its misery early on when Natalie Spooner turned in a shot from Sarah Nurse for her league-high 11th goal of the season.

After taking three more goals in the second, Toronto never looked back. In the third, Maggie Connors’ empty-netter secured the victory and thwarted Ottawa’s bid to rally.

With the three points and the regulation victory, Toronto moved up to second place overall in the PWHL, one spot behind only league-leading Montreal, who defeated Boston 3-1 at home on Saturday.

Just under three minutes into the second period, Brittany Howard gave Toronto a 2-0 lead after Victoria Bach dug out a puck in the corner and fed her in the high slot. Howard’s goal was a classic goal-scorer’s goal as she dove low to block the only area of the net that was truly visible to her. She had had two so far this season.

Subsequently, Spooner increased her assist tally by descending the boards, cutting towards the net, and then launching one into Maschmeyer’s pads, leaving him unable to control a rebound. Hannah Miller was there to tap it in with her fourth of the year.
