REEN BAY — No one, including coordinator Joe Barry or coach Matt LaFleur, would suggest the 2023 Green Bay Packers defense is on par with the 1985 Chicago Bears, 2000 Baltimore Ravens or 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Heck, they’re not even as good as the 1996 Packers, who were the best in the NFL in scoring defense (15.5 points per game) and total defense (259.8 yards per game), or the 2010 Packers, who were second in scoring defense (15.0 points per game) and fifth in total defense (309.1 yards per game).

Both those defenses — led by future Pro Football Hall of Famers Reggie White and LeRoy Butler (in 1996) and Charles Woodson (2010) — also helped the Packers and their future Hall of Fame starting quarterbacks win Super Bowl championships.

So, while this year’s defense isn’t dominating opponents, it is most certainly playing winning football — something that hasn’t always been the case in recent years.
