After exceeding expectations with the San Diego Padres, Gary Sánchez’s season will come to an early end.

The catcher broke his right wrist in Wednesday’s afternoon game against the Philadelphia Phillies when he was hit by a 98 mph fastball from Phillies reliever Jeff Hoffman.

The Padres claimed Sánchez off waivers from the Mets in May, and he found his stride in San Diego. His .217 batting average is the highest it’s been since 2019, when he hit .232 in an All-Star year with the Yankees. He’s hit 19 homers with the Padres, sixth most among MLB catchers this year.

Sánchez signed a minor-league deal with the San Francisco Giants in March, but was cut after posting a .164/.319/.182 slash line in Triple-A. In 13 games, he had no home runs and eight RBI in 55 at-bats. He also struck out 19 times.

The Mets signed Sánchez on May 9, and after he raked for Triple-A Syracuse, they called him up to the major league roster where he had a strong debut catching Max Scherzer. Before New York placed him on waivers, he played three games for the Mets, going 1-of-6, driving in one run and striking out three times.
Sánchez, 30, won a Silver Slugger award and was a two-time All-Star in his six seasons with the Yankees, but he still fell short of expectations and couldn’t live down his reputation as a defensive liability. After being traded to the Minnesota Twins, he batted .205/.282/.377 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 128 games last season, then became a free agent.
