LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – A well-known community member of Laurel County died on Tuesday.

Garth Rex Greer, 85, died on July 2.

He was known best in his community for his professional career and his cowboy hat. Greer’s career ventured into multiple industries, but his first big start was in the highway business. Under his leadership, Elmo Greer and Sons, LLC built highways that spanned from Pennsylvania to Arkansas.

Greer also helped the Board of the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors for nearly a decade. During that time, he served as chairman from 1987-1988.

The UK College of Engineering and Construction Management Founders Society recognized him for his work in 2002 with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Afterward, Greer found himself on the Board of Directors at Cumberland Valley Insurance Management for more than 25 years.

He was also the president and chairman of the First National Bank of Manchester until his passing.

Funeral services for Greer will be Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home.

A burial service will follow at A. R. Dyche Memorial Park in London.
