The last time Dallas Goedert played against the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles tight end suffered a fractured forearm that required surgery and has kept him off the field since.

Just over a month later, Goedert expects to make his return on Sunday—in Dallas. The Eagles listed their top tight end as a full participant in Wednesday’s walkthrough practice on their latest injury report. The 28-year-old told reporters the likelihood is “very high” that he plays his first game since November 5 on Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys this weekend.

And he had a quip ready to go for the occasion.

“I’m really excited to get back,” Goedert said before practice. “And Dallas in Dallas has a nice ring to it. So I’m really glad I’m able to go and kind of put everything else to bed and get out there and play football again.”

Goedert had 38 catches for 410 yards and two touchdowns this season before going down in Week 9. And Philly has felt his absence.

The only other Eagles tight end with a reception this season is Jack Stoll, who has four for 27 yards. Along with receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Goedert forms one of the best pass-catching trios in the league for quarterback Jalen Hurts. But without the 6-foot-5, 256-pounder on the field, Hurts has had some of his worst passing games of the season.

Hurts, an MVP contender, is completing only 59.2 percent of his passes during the last three games without his reliable security blanket over the middle. In the first nine games of the season, with Goedert, the QB’s completion percentage was 68.9 percent.

“Any time you lose a player like Dallas like we’ve been without for a little bit here, you’re going to be affected,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said. “Especially with Dallas, he’s such a good player. Why is he one of the better tight ends in the NFL? Because he’s really good in the run game and he’s really good in the pass game.”

Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson also added Tuesday that some opposing defenses have occasionally doubled Brown “a little more throughout the course of the season since Dallas has been out.”

Goedert underwent surgery the day after the first matchup with the Cowboys, a 28-23 Eagles win. He avoided a stint on injured reserve and credited the team’s strength staff for keeping him in shape.

The Eagles (10-2) went 2-1 without Goedert in the lineup and enter Week 14 as the top seed in the NFC. But Philly is coming off a humbling 42-19 home loss to the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend. So suddenly, the Cowboys (9-3) can even themselves with the Eagles with a win in prime time on Sunday. Dallas has won 14 consecutive games at home, while Philadelphia has lost in its last five trips to AT&T Stadium.

Goedert’s return to the gridiron will be a welcomed sight for the Eagles as they try to improve upon that recent history.

“I was trying to get back last week and it wasn’t quite time,” Goedert said. “But I think my return is going to be this week, so I’m really excited to go and prepare this week and test it out on the field … Obviously, I don’t want to miss any games, but this is a big game. It’s really fun to go down to Dallas every year and play in a fun environment like that.”
