Former Liverpool full-back Steve Nichol insists Destiny Udogie did not deserve to be booked during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur’s match with Liverpool on Saturday night.

In the third minute of injury time of the first half, Udogie received a yellow card for tripping Cody Gakpo.

The 2022 World Cup star will now have to sit on the bench after suffering an injury before scoring the equalizer for the Red Devils following a challenge from the Nigerian-Italian left-back.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones received a direct red card in the 26th minute for allegedly endangering the safety of his opponent.

Nichol believes that Udogie should not have received a yellow card because he had won the ball before the encounter with Gakpo. Reacting to Jones’ dismissal, Nichol pointed out that referee Simon Hooper had been inconsistent in his decisions.

“There is another challenge,” Nichol said on ESPN FC. Udogie fouled Gakpo, he got the ball back 100%, in my opinion it wasn’t even a foul.

“Udogie for some unknown reason committed a foul and received a yellow card for touching Gakpo’s ankle with his knee.

“If we start looking at things as a result or endangering the enemy, explain to me what the difference is between the two.”

Now with three yellow cards, Udogie is facing a tough disciplinary situation as he will automatically face a one-match suspension if he receives two more yellow cards in the next 12 matches.
