The Catalans Dragons prop was expected to return to the NRL next season with Canterbury Bulldogs.

Sio Siua Taukeiaho’s NRL return is off after failing a medical. The Catalans Dragons prop has been set for a return down under for several months, with Canterbury Bulldogs keen to bring him back to the competition.

But the 31-year-old underwent a medical after returning to Australia and it alerted the club to a foot injury that, according to the Daily Telegraph, will require surgery that would see him miss the entire pre-season and early rounds of the season.

As a result, Canterbury have walked away from the deal, leaving Taukeiaho facing an uncertain future. Catalans had yet to release Taukeiaho and he remains under contract with last season’s Grand Finalists for the 2024 season.

Taukeiaho had a disjointed season in Perpignan, managing just ten appearances for the club throughout his first year. What the developments mean for his future, with Catalans or elsewhere, remains to be seen. Catalans do have space on their quota for Taukeiaho, with the Dragons currently using six of their seven spots. They are occupied by Manu Ma’u, Matt Ikuvalu and four of their off-season signings, Chris Satae, Bayley Sironen, Jayden Nikorima and Tariq Sims.

Head coach Steve McNamara is set to oversee a sizable change in his playing squad ahead of the 2024 season. The likes of Mitch Pearce, Sam Tomkins, Tyrone May, Matt Whitley and Adam Keighran have all departed, paving the way for a number of new additions ahead of the new campaign.
