DETROIT — The Detroit Lions released Cameron Sutton on Thursday as authorities continue to search for the defensive back to serve a domestic violence warrant in Florida.

The team announced the move on the X social media platform without offering any other details.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, which includes Tampa, has asked for help in finding Sutton, a seven-year pro who just finished his first season with the Lions and helped them reach the NFC championship game for the first time in 32 years.

The warrant is for domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Sutton may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate, the sheriff’s office has said.

Just over 24 hours after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced that a warrant had been released for Detroit Lions CB Cameron Sutton regarding alleged Domestic Battery by Strangulation, the Lions have officially announced that they have released the veteran cornerback. Following the announcement, fans flooded social media with their reaction to the Lions’ decision to act swiftly and release Sutton.

Heading into the offseason, the Lions were likely banking on Sutton being a starter again in 2024, but that will not be the case now that he has been released. With Sutton out of the picture, we expect the Lions to sign another free-agent cornerback and/or select a starting-caliber cornerback in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
