Former world number one John McEnroe has criticised the coach of Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz for talking too much. The 21-year-old is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz is currently taking part in the French Open, where he has already booked his place in the fourth round after registering a thumping win in the round of 32 against Spain’s Sebastian Korda in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Seven-time Grand Slam winner McEnroe was recently quoted in a report where he criticises the coach of Alcaraz, Juan Carlos Ferrero, for talking too much during the match. “Never heard a coach I don’t think, maybe Tsitsipas’ old man but there’s a lot of talking going on,” he said.
Alcaraz is going through a mixed season. The two-time Grand Slam winner’s best moment in 2024 came while playing at the Indian Wells, where he lifted the title after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1. However, since then, he has struggled with fitness concerns, which is why he ended up withdrawing from the Barcelona Open, Monte-Carlo Masters and the Rome Open.
