Coventry City’s frustrating recent record of failing to find the back of the net from corners continued at the weekend when eight more flag-kicks went begging in the 3-2 defeat at Preston North End.

It’s now been nine games and 77 corners since the Sky Blues scored from the set-piece routine – the last coming from Matty Godden against Cardiff City in September. In the absence of the injured Kasey Palmer and following the summer departure of Gus Hamer, City have largely relied on Josh Eccles and Jay Dasilva to take responsibility for corner kick deliveries this term.

Asked about the issue, manager Mark Robins explained: “Corners are about delivery and movement and that never changes – decision making, delivery and movement but also having somebody on the ball who can see the picture. It’s not just about getting the ball and putting it in an area or just putting it in there and hoping for the best, you’ve got to have a little bit of a method and the method obviously needs to be re-thought, certainly by the person on the ball.

“So that definitely needs a little bit of a look at, which we will look at, it’s as simple as that. There are different ways of doing it. I think decision making at Rotherham where we had Ben Sheaf and played a short corner and it eventually got to the edge of the box and he brought out a brilliant save from the goalkeeper. Balls into the penalty area were invariably headed away by the defenders but we have to go and attack space. It’s as simple as that.
