For the entire offseason, it has been thought that the New York Yankees would be the team to emerge victorious if the San Diego Padres decided to trade star outfielder Juan Soto. The fit is obvious, and New York has trade pieces that could entice San Diego.

The two teams have talked about a potential deal, even discussing players to be involved. But so far, New York has balked at the asking price. This has led to one of the Yankees rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays, to come out as the favorites in any deal Like with any negotiations, the talks are fluid and can change at any time. But it seems that the Yankees and Padres are a ways away from a deal.

MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the Yankees and Padres talks are at a complete stalemate.  With Soto entering the final year of his contract, the Yankees have no interest in giving up this much for a one-year rental. There is no guarantee that he will stay with the team long-term, so it’s risky for them.

San Diego has held firm on their high asking price, and rightfully so. Soto is still one of the elite players in the game today, and they don’t want to part with him. They have to because of salary issues. MLB insider Jon Heyman has also reported that the two sides haven’t spoken recently as well. This further adds fuel to the fire about the Padres possibly trading with someone else.
