A common trend that’s occurred throughout this season is the constant praise heaped on Detroit Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta. This praise is largely due to the maturity and poise he’s displayed while being a key piece of the Lions’ offense. And during Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints, that trend continued following a big day from the 2023 second-round pick.

During the Lions’ 33-28 win over the Saints, LaPorta was arguably the best player on the field for Detroit, finishing with nine receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown. His lone score was a 13-yard grab from Jared Goff to help give the Lions a 14-0 lead following an interception from fellow second-round rookie Brian Branch.

Another notable grab from LaPorta came during the second quarter with 2:53 remaining before the half, as he caught a 48-yard pass, which eventually led to the Lions kicking a field goal to end the third quarter to increase their lead.

LaPorta’s stellar play didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates or coaches, but it definitely did not sneak by New Orleans’ Tyrann Mathieu. Following their loss to the Lions, the All-Pro safety and former Super Bowl champion had nothing but glowing remarks for LaPorta and his performance on Sunday.
“Well, he’s going to be a good player. I told him that after the game,” Mathieu told reporters after the game. “Just crafty for a rookie, man—the kind of routes he runs, his frame, his length, and then obviously, anytime you and the quarterback are on the same page, they’re going to come away with some plays. I thought he probably had two of the more clutch plays in this game.

So there were a few third downs in there. We had everybody covered, and then he just put the ball on his body, not his first down. So we just got to do a better job in the back end of just challenging guys, understanding their route tree, what to expect. But nevertheless, man, he’s going to be a good player for a long time.”

This marked the second time in less than seven days that Mathieu has strong remarks regarding the Lions and their talent. Leading up to Sunday’s game, Mathieu also identified the Lions as one of the best teams the New Orleans Saints would face all season. It’s safe to say the Lions more than proved him to be correct.
