Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was sent off after a ‘broken ankle’ collision with Tottenham’s Yves Bissouma.

The 22-year-old was initially shown a yellow card for a foul, but upon VAR review, referee Simon Hooper changed the yellow card to a red card, much to the dismay of Jurgen Klopp on the touchline. Jones and Bissouma both stretched to collect the ball and reached it within milliseconds of each other, but the Red Devils star’s foot crashed into Bissouma’s on the follow-up.

Fans on social media were divided over the incident, with some believing it was a “stone wall red card” and others labeling it “harsh”. A user from X (formerly Twitter) wrote:

“Dangerous, but more clumsy than anything – foot rolled over the ball. Maybe there’s no option left for a red card.”

How can anyone claim that’s not a red? He literally went studs up on his leg,” another said. A third added: “Potential leg-breaker. Had to go.”
