After surgery, Tony Mowbray is “getting stronger,” according to Birmingham City assistant manager Mark Venus.

The 60-year-old former Sunderland and Birmingham manager took a temporary leave of absence ten days ago to receive treatment for an undisclosed medical problem. On Thursday, Venus provided a positive update during a news conference.

Venus remarked, “To be honest, I’ve talked to him every day. A brief update: everything is good after his operation. He should be returning soon because he is becoming stronger. It’s been pleasant to hear him and speak with him, albeit I won’t say anything right away. It has bolstered our confidence a little.

He provided a brief update to the boys this morning (Thursday). They kept asking, all of them. We’re keeping everyone informed about it. He is growing more powerful.

Prior to Birmingham’s 3-1 loss at Ipswich last week, which left them three points above the Sky Bet Championship’s relegation zone in 18th place, Venus was given temporary leadership. A 2-1 victory over his old team Sunderland, who fired Mowbray in December, marked his final game in charge.
