Will the Bills and Frank Reich make one more comeback together?
On the heels of the news that Frank Reich has been fired as head coach of the Caroline Panthers, coupled with the Buffalo Bills’ recent decision to can offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, an interesting question is percolating like a vat of buffalo wing sauce in the upstate New York area at the moment — would Frank Reich go back to the Buffalo Bills as offensive coordinator?
Reich broke his silence on the firing on Monday to tell the Charlotte Observer that he wasn’t done with football yet, but that he believed, “this is probably the final chapter of my NFL journey.” That sounds pretty definitive, but if there’s one NFL team he’d be willing to coach for again in an offensive coordinator role, it would have to be the Bills.
After all, Reich is still fondly remembered in Buffalo for being the quarterback to orchestrate the greatest comeback in NFL playoff history against the Houston Oilers on January 3, 1993. The 30 year anniversary of that blessed event — in which the Bills came back from being down 35-3 to beat the Oilers 41-38 in overtime — is just over a month away, and if the Bills miss the playoffs for just the second time in the Sean McDermott era, what better occasion would there be to welcome back with open arms a hometown offensive hero?
